A former soldier who verbally and physically abused the mother of his child has walked free from a court after arguing he was 'too immature' to cope with being a father.

Lyas Cullshaw, 23, left his partner with a fractured eye socket and other injuries to her face during a 5.30am row at her home as their baby son lay asleep in his cot.

During the assault, jealous Cullshaw, who suspected his girlfriend had been cheating on him, dragged her onto the landing by her hair then punched her several times in the face.

When she retreated to bed sobbing, he told her: ''Take a shower you dirty bitch',' before adding later: ''You got what you deserved.''
