Renowned author Alasdair Gray's family welcome critically acclaimed Hollywood version of his Poor Things novel

The sister of renowned Scottish author Alasdair Gray has insisted that he wouldn't be furious that every trace of Scotland was wiped from the Hollywood movie based on his book.The glitzy production of Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, Mark Ruffalo and Willem Dafoe, was a major hit at the Golden Globes and other big awards ceremonies.The movie won top award in the musical comedy category and Stone won the gong for best actress.

Oscars are expected to follow. But, unlike the book, the movie has virtually zero Scottish content in the cast, settings or production team.Many Scots have voiced their disappointment and disgust at the way Glasgow was scratched from proceeding - but late author Gray’s sister Mora Rolley said she was thrilled that such a high profile and critically acclaimed movie version had been made.Mora told the Record: “Alasdair was a kind hearted person and I don’t think he will be stomping his feet in anger in heaven at the removal of Glasgow from this film version.“I haven’t seen the film myself but my daughters have and they very much enjoyed it.”Mora told how her brother agreed to offer film rights to the movie - which opened in UK cinemas earlier this month - to director Yorgos Lanthimos after the author walked him around Glasgow shortly before his death in 2019.Mora said: “The reality is that he met the director in Glasgow and gave him a good walking tour of the city.
