More positives to take than negatives. That was the view of Renfrew manager Jimmy Quigley despite their heavy opening-day defeat to Johnstone Burgh. ‘Frew were hoping to upset the odds against their big-spending Renfrewshire rivals at New Western Park in their first competitive game since gaining promotion to the WoSFL First Division.
While they ultimately went down 4-0 to the Keanie Park outfit, led by marquee summer signing Kyle Lafferty who bagged a brace, Quigley was nonetheless pleased with his side’s overall performance.
And he’s confident his team will make strides in the division once they cut out costly errors at the back.Quigley said: “I couldn’t be too hard on the boys on Saturday because we actually played very well.“We tried to be brave on the ball and build from the back.“There were definitely more positives to take than negatives, but ultimately we’ve given away very cheap, simple goals and you just can’t afford to do that against a team with quality players.“The first goal we gave away with a poor pass across the back and it was the same story for their fourth.“It was four very uncharacteristic mistakes from four different players and unfortunately you can’t legislate for that.
It was just one of those days.“I thought we managed Lafferty very well. He didn’t do an awful lot apart from the two goals, which stemmed from our own mistakes.“Teams will have to be wary of him this season, but also of runners off him because he was very clever linking up the play.“It’s still very early days for us in this division and I’m proud and pleased with the performance.”Renfrew will look to pick up their maiden First Division points tomorrow evening when they travel to the Hamish B Allan Stadium to face Rutherglen
