An unnamed Premier League footballer has penned an open letter in which he has revealed that he is gay - but is keeping his sexuality secret from his team-mates.

The letter, which is aimed at authorities and fans, discusses the daily torment that he is currently facing - and also reveals the prejudice in football which has prevented him from coming out.

The star, who is not yet ready to reveal his identity, says only some family members and a 'select group' of friends are aware of his sexuality.

He confirms neither his teammates nor manager know he is gay, but 'dearly hopes' he will be able to tell them 'one day soon'.
