Republic of Ireland u21s manager Jim Crawford has given Motherwell star Ross Tierney a mention after Rangers' Charlie McCann opted to swap Republic of Ireland for Northern Ireland.McCann arrived at Rangers from Premier League giants Manchester United last summer and has impressed in the Ibrox club's Lowland League 'B' team.At international level, the midfielder has represented Ireland at youth level, with Motherwell's Tierney an u21s player with two caps. But McCann has now opted for Northern Ireland in an 'unfortunate' blow for Crawford.
The form of Tierney and others like Will Smallbone is the reason he's been unable to become a regular. Crawford told the LOI Central Podcast : “I spoke to Charlie a few weeks ago and it’s unfortunate that he’s looking now to go and play with Northern Ireland. “I had to say to Charlie that you have to realise that we have Gavin Kilkenny, Conor Coventry, Ross Tierney, Dawson Devoy, Will Smallbone, these players that are all really talented players.“Charlie is a very good player as well but unfortunately he didn’t get ahead of them.“I don’t know what Northern Ireland have said to him but he did say to me that at this particular time, that’s where he’s going.”Tierney arrived at Motherwell from Bohemian in the January transfer window after establishing himself as one of his nation's brightest talents following form in the League of Ireland.Follow Lanarkshire Live Sport onTwitter via@LanLiveSport, like us onFacebookor find us onInstagramfor the latest sports news, pictures and video.
