The Queen was involved in mid-air drama yesterday afternoon as her private plane was forced to abandon its landing due to lightning.

The monarch has been staying in her Scottish home of Balmoral but had left for London on her private jet on a flight from Aberdeen when the storm struck, with heavy rain and hail forcing the aircraft back into the sky.

It meant that the 13-seater plane had to circle the north of the capital for around 15 minutes before it was deemed safe to try again.

The pilot successfully landed at the second attempt at RAF Northolt, having left Aberdeen airport at around 1pm, according to Mirror Online.
