The Queen's pilot had no choice but to abort landing after being caught in a lightning storm, Buckingham Palace has confirmed.

Her Majesty, 96, who is reportedly "embracing the idea of a wheelchair" amid her mobility issues, was travelling back to her home of Windsor following a visit to Balmoral in Aberdeen when the flight was stuck in air thanks to the electrical storm.

According to The Sun, the pilot abandoned landing at RAF Northolt in north London during the first attempt and circled around for 15 minutes until it was safe to make a second attempt.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the delay in landing as a spokesperson said: "The Queen's flight was delayed due to a lightning storm, all the correct procedures were followed and there were no safety concerns."
