Pupils shine at East Ayrshire Primary Schools' Cross Country Championships

Over 450 pupils from 23 schools across the region battled it out in Kilmarnock recently at the East Ayrshire Primary Schools’ Cross Country Championships.The pupils descended on the Ayrshire Athletics Arena across four different events with the pupils showcasing their athletic prowess in the P6 boys, P6 girls, P7 boys and P7 girls categories.Co-ordinated by East Ayrshire’s Active Schools team and supported by East Ayrshire Leisure and Kilmarnock Harriers, the event is part of the East Ayrshire Athletics Partnership programme calendar which aims to increase opportunities for young people to access athletics disciplines and increase their physical activity levels.The event saw 460 youngsters taking part with Provost Claire Leitch saying: “It was excellent to see so many of East Ayrshire’s young people taking part in an outdoor sport, enjoying themselves and having their schoolteachers cheering them on.“The weather didn’t hold them back and these events continue to showcase the excellent sporting infrastructure that we have in East Ayrshire.”Councillor Elaine Cowan, Cabinet Spokesperson for Education and Children and Young People, added: “The sports partnerships and East Ayrshire Sports Council continue to support the schools, communities and people of East Ayrshire with sporting opportunities for people of all ages and abilities.“Support from Active Schools, Vibrant Communities, East Ayrshire Leisure and Kilmarnock Harriers made this event a real success and every young person, even if they didn’t win, left with a smile on their face.”Councillor Jim McMahon, Cabinet Spokesperson for Housing, Transport and Communities, commented: “It was fantastic to see so many young people enjoying the day.“Events like these not only
