A date has been set for an investigation into the death of a 10-year-old boy who fell down a manhole at a building site in Glasgow.

Shea Ryan died after he slipped on a ladder and fell inside a manhole at the site near his home in Drumchapel on July 16, 2020.

The schoolboy was able to enter the facility, which was being worked on by contractors RJ McLeod, through an insecure fence 60 metres away from the local play park. The construction firm was fined £860,000 in April last year for health and safety failures that led to Shea's death.

Now, a Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) into the circumstances of the tragedy is due to take place between August 26 and September 9 at Glasgow Sheriff Court. The purpose of the probe will include determining Shea's cause of death, the circumstances in which the death occurred, and will establish what, if any, reasonable precautions could have been taken and could be implemented in the future to minimise the risk of future deaths in similar circumstances.Unlike criminal proceedings, FAIs are inquisitorial in nature and are used to establish facts rather than to apportion blame.
