Harry was educated at Wetherby School, Ludgrove School, and Eton College. He spent parts of his gap year in Australia and Lesotho. He then underwent officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. He was commissioned as a cornet (second lieutenant) into the Blues and Royals, serving temporarily with his brother Prince William, and he completed his training as a troop leader. In 2007–08, he served for over ten weeks in Helmand, Afghanistan, but was pulled out after an Australian magazine revealed his presence there. He returned to Afghanistan for a 20-week deployment in 2012–13 with the Army Air Corps. He left the army in June 2015.

While she is a spare to Prince George, former BBC Royal Correspondent Jennie Bond has expressed her hopes that the young princess will not "fall into the trap" that her uncle, Prince Harry, has suggested lays in wait for any royals who are not the first-borns.

Jennie exclusively told OK! "Charlotte is so young still but hopefully she is not going to fall in the trap that Prince Harry suggested might be waiting for her and feel a spare part because she is the spare to her elder brother." In one exclusive interview with The Telegraph after the release of his memoir 'Spare', Prince Harry admitted he fears his niece and nephew - Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis - will "end up" like him.

He told the paper: "Though William and I have talked about it once or twice, and he has made it very clear to me that his kids are not my responsibility, I still feel a responsibility knowing that out of those three children, at least one will end up like me, the spare and that hurts, that worries me." Jennie explained: "I mean, Harry has a huge chip on his shoulder about being a spare, we all know that now, but he doesn't have to assume that William and Catherine's.
