King Charles has shared his sadness at the death of a British man he knew personally in the New Orleans vehicle attack on New Year Day.

BBC News reports that Edward Pettifer, aged 31, who was among the 14 people killed in the attack, was the stepson of Alexandra Pettifer, the nanny who took care of Princes William and Harry as teenagers following the separation of their parents Charles and Diana.

Before her marriage, Alexandra Pettifer was named Alexandra Legge-Bourke, but was always referred to in the UK press by her nickname ‘Tiggy.’ An outdoor-loving aristocrat, she was credited for creating an atmosphere of normality for the young princes, particularly after their mother’s death in 1997.

She left the royal household in 1999, following her marriage to Charles Pettifer. The BBC reports that Charles has been in touch with the family to share his condolences.
