Sir Alan Bates has tied the knot with his partner Suzanne Sercome after 34 years together, marrying in a stunning Caribbean wedding ceremony on Richard Branson's private island, Necker Island, in a ceremony officiated by the Virgin boss. The Post Office campaigner, who rose to fame when his story was the focus of ITV drama Mr Bates vs The Post Office, surprised Suzanne with the nuptials - reports the Sunday Times. “It just seemed a good idea being on Necker and it being a wonderful place," Alan told the publication.
Virgin tycoon Richard Branson reportedly invited Alan and Suzanne to his island after the former joked that he'd 'love a holiday' from the mogul earlier this year in an interview.
And following the joyous wedding news, Richard told The Sunday Times: “It was an absolute joy to play a small part in Alan and Suzanne’s love story, and I know they will continue to spread the beautiful light they share with everyone around them.” Alan and Suzanne put their life savings into their post office business, but he was let go back in 2003 after the faulty computer system - Horizon - showed money was appearing to go missing. This resulted in Alan and Suzanne losing their £65,000 investment.
Later, Alan led a campaign for Post Office whistleblowers and eventually lodged a Group Litigation Order against the Post Office at the High Court, involving 555 claimants.
