Police officers were unable to hold back the tears as they lined a street in Washington to honour a colleague who was murdered at the US Capitol riots.

Officer Brian Sicknick died after he was hit over the head with a fire extinguisher as he tried to prevent Donald Trump supporters from storming the building on Wednesday.

The officer was a veteran with the armed forces and had served six years in the New Jersey Air National Guard, as a leader of the 108th Security Force Squadron.

Four people died during the riots including US Air Force veteran Ashli Babbit, who was shot dead by police. In a further tragic twist, Officer Howard Liebengood reportedly took his life three days after he policed at the riots.
