A petition has been launched to try and halt the £750,000 transformation of a Fair City sports hall into a fitness gym.Perth District Volleyball organiser David Munro set up the appeal on Wednesday evening after Live Active Leisure announced plans in November to invest three quarters of a million pounds into transforming the Coaching Hall at Bell’s Sports Centre.

A number of representatives from local volleyball, netball and hockey clubs attended a Perth and Kinross Sports Council meeting last month to voice their concerns over the plans.

All fitness activities are to be transferred from Live Active Rodney to the hall, with the project scheduled to begin early this year and be completed in May.The Coaching Hall currently provides six badminton courts, which will be repurposed into a 100-station gym integrating cardiovascular, resistance, spinning, conditioning and functional fitness equipment all into one area. The existing strengthening and conditioning gym at Bell’s, and the former café area, will be redesigned to provide flexible studio space.David Munro said the Coaching Hall’s sprung wooden floor - which would be removed - is “vital” and an “ideal sports facility for many team sports such as basketball, volleyball, badminton, netball and also for gymnastics”.

He and past president of Perth and District Badminton Association and Badminton Scotland, Ian Brown, are also “extremely worried” that national tournaments will be moved away from Perth as a result.
