Dogs owners are being urged to stop sharing beds with their pets in a bid to stop an untreatable superbug. The mcr-1 gene is believed to transfer from animals to humans and is already estimated to have killed 700,000 people a year across the world.
Scientists are warning of a nightmare scenario where humans pick up the bug, which is known to create resistance to life-saving drugs.
The gene which was first identified in China 2015, is predicted to kill 10 million a year by 2050 if left unchecked, the Daily Express reports.
Scientists urge people not to regularly share beds with domestic dogs which harbour mcr-1, which is in the gut and transported via microscopic fecal particles.
