Perth Indian restaurant family gives out 600 free meals to strangers on Christmas Day

A Perth restaurant has shown outstanding generosity by inviting 600 people to enjoy its food on Christmas Day for free.Tabla Indian Restaurant in South Street won Best Asian Restaurant (Tayside) 2023 at the Asian Restaurant Awards and Best Indian Takeaway (Central) at the 2023 Spice Awards, so the family-run kitchen has no trouble finding customers.But for the second year running, owners Praveen Kumar and wife Swarna decided on Christmas Day their food would be shared with those who were homeless and feeling isolated in the Fair City of Perth.They explained that “supporting communities in need has always been a cherished tradition” for the Kumar family.The couple organised a remarkable community lunch at Tabla Indian Restaurant on December 25, where they served over 600 meals.Last year when they did this, the food was all used up within 45 minutes having given out 200 portions, so this year Tabla was well organised in advance.Three chefs worked for 18 hours between them to prepare their biggest ever festive curry spread, a hot meal of Hyderabad Dum Biryani and vegetable pakoras.Rabbit Hole Cakes added sweet goodies to the meal.Volunteers walked the streets looking for people to invite in to eat and enjoy company.All afternoon the restaurant dining room was filled with people, mainly those not originally from Perth.Parcels containing hot meals were delivered to the Salvation Army’s Greyfriars House, Anchor House and Wellgate House.The team stopped by CATH and Community Alarms with food to distribute.Praveen said afterwards: “As Swarna and I reminisce about our childhood, we are grateful for the opportunity to give back to the community that raised us, especially during this festive season, in Southern India.“We are
