Members past and present of the Royal Scottish Country Dance Society’s (RSCDS) Wednesday Class gathered together last month to celebrate the many contributions to dancing in Perth of Christian Catto, who, principally, had taught this class for the past 45 years.

A specially-chosen dance programme included ‘Pelorus Jack’ whose first tune, written by the late Perth musician Allan Kindness, is entitled ‘Christian Catto’.Other dances included ‘The Celebration Strathspey’ and one of Christian’s favourites ‘The Dream Catcher’.

During the interval, current teacher, Fiona Goudie, highlighted Christian’s other contributions to the Scottish dancing world both in Perth and beyond, including her teaching of children’s classes for the Perth and Dundee festivals, at the Summer School in St Andrews, on foreign teaching tours and in Canada during an exchange year there.

She had also been chairman of the branch and served on the society’s publications and research committee.Four long-standing members of the Wednesday Class - Ethel Keay, Betty McRae, Rhona Walsh and Elsie Nicoll - made the presentations on behalf of everyone with an inscribed quaich on a plinth, a specially-designed card with personal messages from members and a beautiful arrangement of flowers.Christian spoke to thank everyone for the gifts and for their support and friendship over the years. An appropriately-decorated cake was cut by Christian and enjoyed by all.An organiser said: “Dancers know that the Scottish dancing world in Perth will be the poorer now that Christian has retired.”
