'We will find out who has done this': Disgust as war memorial trashed by 'mindless vandals'
Atherton, Wigan, was found trashed on Tuesday morning by residents. Remembrance wreaths and flower planters had been thrown aside and a wicker statue of a First World War soldier had been torn apart. The wicker statue is worth up to £1,000, according to local councillors, and has been left 'irreparable'.The damage comes just days before the 75th anniversary of VJ Day - the end of the Second World War - causing 'anxiety' that could 'push people over the edge'.A clean-up was started by local councillors Stuart Gerrard and James Watson.
