Prince’s classic 1984 album ‘Purple Rain’ is receiving a new audio-immersive Dolby Atmos re-issue for its 40th anniversary.The new mix is being made available by NPG Records and Paisley Park Enterprises, in partnership with Warner Records, and is available to stream now via participating streaming services.The album, recorded by Prince and the Revolution, arrived weeks ahead of the hit film of the same name. The record topped the US charts for 24 weeks, sold over 25 million copies worldwide and picked up awards at the Grammys, Brits and Oscars.The Atmos version has been mixed from the original master tapes by Chris James, a longtime collaborator with Prince, and an audiophile Blu-ray version will be released later in the year.A newly restored 4K version of the Purple Rain film is also receiving a release, with a limited theatrical run set to start on July 3.Also this weekend, at the iconic Paisley Park Studios in Minnesota, Prince fans are congregating for Celebration 2024.

Purple Rain, Prince‘s smash 1984 music-packed film, is being developed for the stage by a Broadway producer, with a book by two-time Pulitzer Prize finalist Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and direction by Tony nominee Lileana Blain-Cruz.

Prince has been regarded as one of the greatest musicians of all time. As a master of several instruments, he is credited with spearheading the “Minneapolis Sound” – a blend of funk rock with elements of synth-pop and new wave – along with releasing classic albums such as Prince, 1999, Purple Rain.After winning the award for Best Original Song Score at the 1985 Oscars, Prince continued his rise to the top, recording what was perhaps his best body of work, Sign o’ the Times.

Prince‘s father in Purple Rain, has died aged 81.The actor passed away on Friday (June 4) after being diagnosed with colon cancer, his manager confirmed on Sunday (June 6).Prince’s estate paid tribute to the actor via Twitter for his “gripping performance” as the performer’s abusive father in the singer’s 1984 film.“In addition to iconic roles in The Mod Squad and Twin Peaks, Clarence will forever be remembered for his gripping performance as The Kid’s father, Francis L., in Prince’s breakthrough film Purple Rain,” read the post.Rest in honor, Clarence Williams III.
