Kathryn Kates has died at the age of 73 after a battle with cancer, her reps have revealed. Headline Talent Agency confirmed the Seinfeld star passed away on Saturday 22 January as they shared in a statement: "Kathryn has been our client for many years, and we have grown much closer to her in this last year since she knew of her cancer returning. "She was always incredibly brave and wise and approached every role with the greatest of passion.

  Kathryn grew up in New York, but began her career in Los Angeles as one of the founding members of The Colony Theater. She produced all of the company's plays in the first six years from 1975 to 1981 alongside Barbara Beckley.While she only landed a few small on-screen roles during the 80s, that all changed in the following decade.The actress went on to appear in some of the most popular shows at that time, including Matlock and Thunder Alley.Kathryn starred in legendary NBC sitcom Seinfeld, where she played the ‘counter woman’ from whom George (Jason Alexander) is trying to procure a marble rye in memorable scenes. She also landed more small roles in hits like Disney show Lizzie McGuire, Caroline in the City, and Judging Amy.Many will remember Kathryn from her notable recent work, which includes edgy Netflix show Orange Is the New Black. In the dramedy about a privileged New Yorker who ends up in a women’s prison, Kathryn plays the mother of Larry (American Pie’s Jason Biggs), who is the protagonist Piper Chapman’s (Taylor Schilling) ex-fiancé.Kathryn also had a memorable role as Mrs.Saperstein in Shades of Blue, a series fronted by Jennifer Lopez, which follows a New York police officer and single mother working in the F.B.I.'s anti-corruption task force.In the show, Mrs.Saperstein is the mother of Detective David Saperstein, who is played by Santino Fontana.The actress went on to star as Judge Marlene Simons in five episodes of Law & Order: Special Victims Unit between 2017 and 2020.She also played Amelia Diamond in an episode of legal drama The Good Fight entitled The Gang Discovers Who Killed Jeffrey Epstein. Last year, Kathryn appeared in David Chase’s The Many Saints of Newark, where she played Angie DeCarlo.The
