Octopus Energy is to extend a support scheme to include people over State Pension age after the UK Government said that it is removing annual Winter Fuel Payments for around 10 million older people across Great Britain from this year.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced on July 29 that the payment, worth between £100 and £300, will only be made to around 1.5 million State Pensioners on means-tested benefits such as Pension Credit.

The eligibility change means that millions of pensioners who received the payment last year will not be due the money this winter.

However, Octopus said it will continue its £30 million assistance fund into this winter, and that State Pensioners who do not meet the new criteria for Winter Fuel Payments will be eligible.
