Pensioner who killed cyclist after dragging him 30 meters under truck jailed

A pensioner who killed a cyclist after knocking him off his bike on a rural Scots road has been jailed. Adam Fernie, 80, failed to see 66-year-old Iain Anderson - who was cycling on the B937 near Ladybank in Fife - as he careered into him with his truck.

The impact of the collision smashed the windscreen of the Nissan Cabstar as Iain was pushed 30m along the road. Passers-by rushed to help the cyclist - but he tragically died at the scene of the horror incident, which happened on August 25, 2019.Harrowing pictures taken from the scene showed the smashed up truck and Iain's mangled bicycle.Fernie was found guilty of causing death by dangerous driving following a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh today.The OAP was sentenced to two years and eight months in prison and has been banned from driving for six years and four months.He will also be required to sit an extended test before he can drive again.David Green, Procurator Fiscal for Homicide and Major Crime said: “Adam Fernie’s dangerous driving had terrible consequences, taking Iain Anderson’s life and leaving his family without a husband, father and grandfather."Our thoughts are with his family during what must be a very difficult time for them.“This case highlights the potential repercussions of dangerous driving and the great harm it can cause.“It is thanks to a thorough investigation by the dedicated Road Traffic Investigation Unit that this conviction and sentence has been secured.” Don't miss the latest news from around Scotland and beyond - Sign up to our daily newsletter here.
