Firefighters rushed to Broom Lane, in Levenshulme, when a blaze broke out in a ground floor flat just after 3pm on Monday afternoon (March 21).
A woman in her seventies was later taken to hospital in a critical condition, police said. An air ambulance was seen leaving the area at around 4.30pm.
The front door of the flat was damaged and the downstairs windows were smashed during the incident. Smoke damage was also visible inside and outside the house.
