Paul O’Grady’s ex wife of 28 years has broken her silence on the star’s tragic death at the age of 67. Teresa Fernandes was secretly married to the For The Love Of Dogs star for 28 years after the pair wed in 1977 to stop her from being deported.

Speaking for the first time about her beloved friend’s untimely death, Teresa told the Daily Mail: “We probably enjoyed one of the longest marriages in showbiz!” Paul, who was openly gay, married Portuguese Teresa in 1977 out of “convenience” and to stop her being “hassled” by her family.

Previously speaking about the marriage, Paul revealed that while they only had legally divorced in 2005, they had never been in a relationship. "Teresa, I call her the lesbian Portuguese barmaid, was lovely.

She looked like David Cassidy," he joked. "We worked in a club in Westbourne Grove, London, when I was 22. She was from a very strict Catholic family and was always being hassled by them: 'Why aren't you getting married?' So I said: 'Come on then, we'll get married', and we did.
