Owen Farrell against Finn Russell provides a fascinating sub-plot to tonight’s Calcutta Cup clash at Twickenham. It is too early to bill it as an eliminator for Lions’ fly-half selection, but no question it offers up a pointer.
Farrell is the known quantity. He has worn the jersey, won Test matches and the Lions have lost neither series in which he has played.
Russell is the maverick, the fly-half all of us would pay to watch but a guy capable of costly mistakes as well as outrageous brilliance.
Twice in Scotland’s last three meetings with England he has shredded their defence with his vision and his distribution. I’ve been really impressed with the growth he’s shown and the breadth of skill he’s developed since his move to France.
