Parents are being told to check whether they could claim Child Benefit, even if they think they earn too much. A financial expert said there were "a few ways that you can still benefit".

Households can collectively earn up to £60,000 per year to claim £25.60 per week for the eldest or only child, plus a further £16.95 per week for every child thereafter.

After that, HMRC charges earners a High Income Child Benefit Charge, but Katie Guild, co-founder of Nugget Savings, said there were ways to maximise the benefits.

She said: “Firstly, if either of you earns £80,000 or above there is no financial benefit to claiming child benefit. If you earn £60,000 or more before tax each year you can still claim Child Benefit, but you'll have to start paying a 'Child Benefit tax charge'.
