Paisley man is calling for action to stop children smoking

A campaigner is calling on Renfrewshire Council to help stop children taking up smoking.Paisley man Andrew Doyle said he was impressed to see signs installed at playparks in Greenock on a recent visit there.The signs read, ‘Young Lungs at Play’ and Andrew said he’d be keen to see something similar at playparks across Renfrewshire.Don't miss the latest headlines from around Renfrewshire.

Sign up to our newsletters here.He said: “If adults are standing around the play area smoking, it would encourage the kids to smoke as well.“I’m not anti-smoking, I’m an ex-smoker myself.

But I don’t want children to make the same mistakes as myself and others.“I’m suffering the consequences of smoking now with my health.”Smoking is prohibited in playparks across Renfrewshire but Andrew said signs to that effect would help reinforce an no-smoking message.He added: “I think it would be a nice touch to have these signs.

It shows that the council cares about its young people and its residents.“It would also mean they’re not being exposed to second-hand smoke.“Anything we can do to stop children taking up smoking has to be a good thing.”Back in 2018, Renfrewshire’s Health and Social Care Partnership signed up to the ASH Charter.The Charter for a Tobacco-free Generation is an initiative from health charity Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) Scotland, developed in response to the Scottish Government’s goal of creating a tobacco-free generation of Scots by 2034.The charter has six key principles that encourage organisations to examine how they can best contribute to the tobacco-free goal.A Renfrewshire Council spokesperson said they were looking into installing signs by Play Scotland to discourage smoking near to playparks.They added: “Smoking
