The 40-year-old Outlander star has appeared on a list of favourites to play the X-Men character after Hugh Jackman announced that he would be quitting the role after 2017 film Logan.
Big names such as Tom Hardy, Henry Cavill and Michael B Jordan all appear on the list alongside the Balmaclellan actor. But despite the stature of those names, Sam came out on top in a poll of more than 12,000 people on JustJared.com.
Almost half of the votes were placed on Sam becoming the next person to play the Marvel character, leaving the likes of Jamie Dornan and Taron Egerton in the dust.
