Jordan Moreau The 2025 Oscars are finally here and ready to crown some winners after a twisty awards season. Unlike last year when “Oppenheimer” dominated every major precursor, the 2025 circuit has seen a revolving door of frontrunners.
Netflix’s “Emilia Pérez,” a musical about a drug lord who undergoes gender-affirming surgery, led the way with 13 Oscar nominations, followed by A24’s architectural epic “The Brutalist” and Universal’s Broadway adaptation “Wicked” with 10 each.
However, “Emilia Pérez’s” Oscar chances took a hit after a social media controversy erupted around past offensive tweets by lead actress nominee Karla Sofía Gascón.
Now, the best picture race seems more uncertain. “Conclave,” the Focus Features drama about a papal election, won top prizes at the SAG and BAFTA ceremonies last week, while “The Brutalist” won the Golden Globe for best drama.
