One of UK's last mines closes - but it's not the end for fuel that made Britain great

King Coal is not dead. He is merely resting, avoiding those who would give him the last rites. Last week’s decision to close the Bradley surface mine in Co Durham was greeted as the death knell of the fuel that made Britain prosperous.

But the obituaries are premature. Big open-cast mines and tiny underground collieries are still in production and a new deep pit is planned in Cumbria.

We have dug coal since Roman times and our love affair with burning “black diamonds” in our hearths is not over yet. Despite virus problems, coal mer­­chants insist they have “plentiful stocks for everyone to enjoy on their solid fuel fires for many years to come”.
