Robbie Williams is paying tribute to his former mentee, Liam Payne. For those who don’t know, the Take That alum mentored One Direction when they competed on The X Factor UK in 2010.

He remained in touch with the band members, including Liam, over the years. So, you can imagine that when the news that the 31-year-old singer died after jumping from the fourth-story balcony of his hotel room in Buenos Aires broke on Wednesday, Robbie, like so many of us, felt a lot of emotions.

For him, the most overwhelming ones were shock and “sadness,” as he noted in a new post to Liam. In the message, William wished Liam luck on his career, saying: The Strip That Down artist appreciated the support and responded to the email by saying: Wow… Unfortunately, things didn’t seem to pan out the way Liam wanted to in the long run, as he reportedly was dropped from his record label before his untimely death.
