An Olympic medal winner auctioned off the precious gong she won at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics to pay for life-saving heart surgery for a baby.

Javelin thrower Maria Andrejczyk sold the silver medal for €106,000 to help eight-month-old Miloszek Malysa from her native Poland get treatment in the US.

After the auction Andrejczyk was told that the winner, Polish convenience store chain Zabka, decided she could keep the medal.

The company said it was ‘moved by the beautiful and extremely noble gesture’ on the part of Andrejczyk, 25, who is a cancer survivor.
