The United boss was without Victor Lindelof, Luke Shaw and Paul Pogba for the clash with the Championship side at Old Trafford, which United won 1-0 courtesy of a fifth minute header from Scott McTominay.
Solskjaer made nine changes for the game, but was forced to call on captain Harry Maguire shortly before half-time after defender Eric Bailly went down with a head injury following a collision with his own goalkeeper, Dean Henderson.
