Council chiefs in Oldham fear the town will be forced into a Leicester-style Covid-19 lockdown later this week. Bars, restaurants and gyms could be closed in less than 48 hours if the government decides drastic action is needed to control the spread of the virus.

Council leader Sean Fielding said such a decision - expected to be made on Thursday - would be a disaster. Oldham has been near the top of the country’s league table of infection rates.

But Mr Fielding said the figures are falling. For the seven days until August 14, the rate was down slightly from 94.5 to 91.5 per 100,000 people, with 217 new cases, compared to the previous week.
