An oil rig worker who smashed up his Porsche whilst he drove home drunk in the wake of Storm Dennis has been banned from driving after he blamed last month's 140mph ''super-cyclone'' for the crash.

Oil rig worker Nicholas Hird, 31, ploughed his 911 Turbo car in a street sign after agreeing to giving two friends a lift home in bad weather when they left a swanky restaurant together.

But police spotted him walking away from the crash scene in Alderley Edge, Cheshire with one of his personalised number plates which had fallen off the luxury vehicle and chased him.

Hird threw away the number plate and tried to run off but accidentally bundled over a beat officer who was attempting to detain him.
