Nurse accused of ‘poisoning babies’ allegedly attacked premature child in front of his mother, trial hears

The neonatal nurse who allegedly ‘poisoned’ premature babies attacked one baby in front of his mother, a trial has heard. Lucy Letby, 32, is charged with murdering seven babies and faces 15 attempted murder charges involving ten more children.

Ms Letby, of Arran Avenue, Hereford, denies all 22 offences, which allegedly occurred whilst she was working as a neonatal nurse at the Countess of Chester Hospital between June 2015 and June 2016. Speaking of Child E, who was born at 29 weeks old in August 2015, he was given treatment for high blood pressure and was given milk and was ‘stable’.

During the night shift, Ms Letby was the designated nurse, and at around 9pm, the baby’s mum (who cannot be named for legal reasons) visited her son for a feed. “She interrupted Lucy Letby who was in the process of attacking Child E – although she did not realise it at the time,” Mr Johnson said. “When Child E’s mum arrived, he was acutely distressed and bleeding from his mouth.” Prosecutor said she was ‘fobbed off’ by Ms Letby, who told her that the blood was due to the tube that was going through his nose into his stomach that was irritating his throat. “Trust me, I’m a nurse”, that’s what she (Letby) said to her,” Mr Johnson told the court..
