The number of people claiming Universal Credit has begun to fall in some Greater Manchester boroughs for the first time since the Covid-19 pandemic began.
Before this month, the number of claimants of the all-in-one benefit had been increasing across the city-region consistently since March 2020.
While in most boroughs the number is still going up, the rate of increase has slowed massively. READ MORE:Counter terrorism police arrest man in Manchester over Texas siege The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions show the number of claimants have gone up in Wigan, Trafford, Tameside and Stockport.
For Wigan, the number of claimants in the borough went up from 30,464 in November 2021 to 30,571 in December. In Trafford the increase was just 19 people – going from 15,752 to 15,771 in a month.
