Number 10 has refused to rule out reducing the number of days households can mix over Christmas from five to three. Neither would Boris Johnson's spokesman rule out reducing the number of households which can mix from three to two.
It comes amid growing calls for the PM to scrap the relaxed rules over the festive period, with leading medical journals warning they would lead to more deaths as hospitals are overwhelmed.
The PM's spokesman said: "This Christmas will not be normal, but we wanted to give families and friends the option to meed up in a cautious way should they wish to." But he added: "As has been the case throughout the pandemic, we keep all advice under constant review." The spokesman would not be drawn on how close to Christmas
