NS&I has issued a clarifying statement for those concerned over what documents they may need to prove their identity. In the UK, NS&I is legally required to verify a saver's identity and address when they apply to invest in a Premium Bond with it, or to register for their online and phone services.
The savings bank may also sporadically ask savers to verify their identity in order to update their records or ensure their current records are still accurate.
Generally, a saver's identity is checked via a credit reference agency, however, this is not always successful. Because of this, savers may be asked to provide further evidence of their identity or a family member's identity.
One such saver asked NS&I on X, formerly Twitter, about one document in particular and whether it was a good enough form of proof.
