Notorious British serial killer will die locked in underground glass prison alone

A notorious serial killer will remain in an isolated underground cell until he dies after spending more than 16,500 consecutive days locked up in isolation.Robert Maudsley was caged in 1974 at the age of 21 after being found guilty of murdering convicted child molester John Farrell, aged 30.The triple murderer - dubbed Hannibal the Cannibal - turned 70 behind bars last month and set a new world record for the most days spent in solitary confinement earlier this year.

He is in custody at Wakefield prison and kept in a specially built cell which is said to have a concrete slab for a bed and be 18ft by 15ft - slightly bigger than average, the Mirror reports.

The killer spends all of his time alone in a a glass box deep inside of the prison and is not allowed to associate with prisoners or even guards as he is deemed to be so dangerous.The tiny see-through room has been his home for decades and is built with bulletproof windows.

Inside is a table and chair made of compressed cardboard, with the lavatory and sink bolted to the floorMaudsley is fed through a small slot at the bottom of the steel door which opens into a small cage within the cell, encased in thick Perspex.
