With Not Going Out airing its 100th episode this Christmas, fans are well acquainted with the lives of chaotic couple Lee and Lucy, played by comic Lee Mack and Beyond Paradise ’s Sally Bretton.
However, Lee has revealed there was originally a different actress playing his love interest – Doctor Who ’s Catherine Tate.
The 55-year-old, who created the sitcom in 2004, revealed that Catherine originally filled the role of Kate in the pilot after the pair performed at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe together. “We did a sketch show and there was a sketch set in a flat and it just grew and grew.
We used all the sketches on a show called The Sketch Show on ITV but I kept that one in case we ever did a sitcom,” Lee reveals. “Catherine was in the pilot.” Looking up at a giant shot of Catherine on a big screen nearby, Lee jokes, “Catherine is quite scary to work with but, at 9ft 6in, she’s even more terrifying.
