Nicola Sturgeon 'foolish' to talk up prospect of referendum with independence support at 50%

The SNP should enter the next Westminster election with a clear pledge that a vote for the party is a vote for independence, a veteran Nationalist has said.

Former depute leader Jim Sillars accused Nicola Sturgeon of failing to put the constitutional question at the heart of the Holyrood poll in May, which saw the First Minister returned to power but one seat short of majority.

He told the Record it was "foolish" to talk up the prospect for another referendum taking place before the end of 2023 when recent polling has put support for ending the Union at around 50 per cent.With speculation mounting at last week's Tory conference that Boris Johnson could call an election that same year, Sillars said the SNP must be unambiguous in its demands
