NHS Tayside has said it is “extremely busy” dealing with substantial increases in cases of flu, Covid-19 and other viruses. The board said at the weekend it is currently seeing “extraordinary high levels” of flu that are still on the rise locally as well as more people requiring care in hospital and urged the public to play its part in preventing services from becoming overrun.A spokesperson admitted the whole system of health and social care was under “intense pressure” but insisted there were a few easy ways people can help ensure medical teams across hospital and community services can keep delivering care and treatment to everyone who needs it.The latest figures from Public Health Scotland show that, in the week leading up to Christmas, 394 people waited over four hours at A&E in NHS Tayside, 26 waited over eight hours and eight waited over 12 hours.Dr Andy Reddick, emergency medicine consultant and clinical service director for winter, commented: “We have the plans in place to help us face the challenges of winter, however there are ways every person in Tayside can help support us over this extremely challenging time.“If you’re otherwise fit and healthy, there’s usually no need to see a doctor if you have flu-like symptoms so please only use urgent care services such as A&E, GP’s or out-of-hours if you really need to.“Most common winter illnesses can be managed easily at home.

Make sure you get lots of rest, keep warm, drink plenty of water and take paracetamol or ibuprofen for a temperature and aches and pains.“You should stay off work or school until you’re feeling better and if you do have to go out in public, please consider wearing a face mask to avoid spreading germs to others.“Visit www.nhsinform.scot or
