NHS chiefs have this week denied plans to ‘run down’ vital services at Ayr Hospital.A senior source has claimed that talks are underway to dramatically shake-up the system.They claim Ayr’s Accident & Emergency unit could be under threat and their long-term aim is to shift it to Crosshouse in Kilmarnock.But NHS chiefs have denied this is the case and they are committed to retaining A&E at Ayr Hospital and at Crosshouse.They have also rubbished allegations that Ayr’s acute surgical services and Intensive Care Unit are also being considered to be shifted to Crosshouse.Health bosses this week insisted there are no plans to close the Emergency Department (ED) or to remove critical care services at Ayr.They said any service change would require a public consultation, adding that no consultations are “actively” being prepared.But our source, who wished to remain anonymous, insisted: “A six-figure patient base will see the removal of all the major medical services they’ve been enjoying at Ayr for years.“Thousands in Ayr and Prestwick alone will face having to travel to Crosshouse – either as patients or visitors.“Ayr Hospital is gradually being reduced to a nurse-led minor treatment centre.”Tory MSP Sharon Dowey said any plans to uproot Ayr’s A&E would be “disastrous news for the whole of East and South Ayrshire” and she would be writing to the Health Secretary immediately.She added: “I’ll be writing to Humza Yousaf immediately asking him to allay their fears by ruling out any possibility of these plans seeing the light of day.“The prospect of A&E services being transferred to Crosshouse is more than just inconvenient – it is downright dangerous and could literally costs lives.“A town of Ayr’s size deserves and needs a hospital
