Ian Murray has said his late dad would be “incredibly proud” of him becoming the first Labour Scottish Secretary in fourteen years.The MP also revealed how his mum, who raised him as a single parent, was in tears when she saw him walk into Downing Street.Murray was just nine years old when his dad Jim collapsed in front of him and later died in hospital.They had been playing snooker at their home in Edinburgh when the 39-year-old had a cerebral haemorrhage.Murray’s political career started when he was elected to Edinburgh Council before winning a seat for Labour at Westminster in 2010.Asked how his dad would feel about him entering Government, he said:“He’d be incredibly proud.
He’d love to be wandering around this office. He died at 39 - he was nine years younger than I am now. He would be over the moon.”He said of Mum Lena’s reaction: “She was in tears watching me walking down Downing Street.
She was an emotional wreck all weekend.”Murray previously opened up in 2022 about the tragic death of his dad:"We were playing snooker at home, mum was out at the bingo, and he was in his pyjamas.
His bottoms fell down and I was only nine so I started laughing, my brother was a little bit embarrassed and a bit concerned.
