Customers and small businesses are set to benefit from new rules coming into force this week. The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) will introduce new rules that dictate banks and building societies to examine whether local communities have adequate access to cash services.

If any community is found to be lacking, then banks are expected to provide additional services, including branches and ATMs.

New rules are set to come into effect from Wednesday (September 18) which will see banks and building societies be required to respond to residents in a local community, local organisations, and other groups, if they request an assessment for their area to find any gaps in local access to cash services.

The FCA confirmed that gaps could be filled with a variety of measures, including Post Office facilities. It will be up to the banks themselves to deliver any required additional services to fill in the gap.
