New official figures show more than 63,500 'excess deaths' during coronavirus pandemic

Covid-19 deaths since the week lockdown was imposed, with 1,822 deaths involving the virus - out of a total of 9,824 deaths.The total number of deaths is also a fall from the previous week's data - but still 1,653 deaths higher than what would usually be expected for this time of year.The 1,822 deaths involving Covid-19 is just 18.5 per cent of the total number of deaths that week and the lowest number of weekly coronavirus deaths for eight weeks.While numbers are falling, there have been tens of thousands of 'excess' deaths recorded during the pandemic.This is the number of additional deaths when compared to the average number of deaths over five years for the same period.Today's ONS figures show 57,961 excess deaths in England and Wales.
