The independent football regulator will have the power to resolve the ongoing dispute over money distribution between the Premier League and the EFL.
The Government has previously warned that the regulator would have "backstop powers" to step in if needed. These powers will be confirmed on Tuesday when the Football Governance Bill is introduced to Parliament. "These powers mean that if the leagues fail to agree on a new deal on financial distributions, then the backstop can be triggered to ensure a settlement is reached," said a Government announcement about the Bill.
The exact details of when these powers would be used and what they would look like are still unclear. However, the Government mentioned last September that it was considering binding final offer arbitration as one option. It was hoped that the Premier League's clubs would make a formal offer to the EFL at a meeting last Monday, but no offer was made.
