Jack Charlton’s wife puts a reassuring hand on his shoulder as dementia reduced the football giant to a shadow of his former self.
The scene is from a new film which shows for the first time the England hero’s struggle with the syndrome. The documentary – Finding Jack Charlton – shows the 1966 World Cup winner and former Republic of Ireland manager in the final months of his life.
His wife Pat says in one clip: “They think a lot of you, don’t they, in Ireland.” Confused Jack replies: “I have no idea.” In another moving scene in the film shot at his home in Northumberland, he tells his wife of 62 years: “I could not remember a lot of the memories.” Pat.
