Netflix has renewed big-budget Indian drama series Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. After launching on the streamer on May 1, the Sanjay Leela Bhansali series became the most-watched Indian series on Netflix in its first week and trended in Top 10 charts in 43 countries.

The series remains in the Global Top 10 (Non-English) chart after four weeks and has landed a re-up. The news was delivered during a flashmob dance on Carter Road, Mumbai, where performers danced to a medley of songs from season one.

The series follows a power struggle in pre-independent India and features the courtesans who ruled the Heeramandi district of Lahore and a young heir caught between choosing love or succession. “I’m blessed by the love and appreciation for Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar,” said Bhansali. “It’s been a joy to see the show resonate with audiences worldwide, and I couldn’t have asked for a better partner than Netflix.

I’m happy to announce that we’ll be back with season 2.” “Sanjay Leela Bhansali has intricately woven magic to bring Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar to life,” said Monika Shergill, Vice-President Content, Netflix India. “Watching audiences everywhere fall in love with this series — making it truly their own as a cultural phenomenon — has been hugely energizing and it thrills me to share that we will be back with Season 2.” Last year, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said India was the streamer’s fastest-growing market.
